Shopify Bot Protection: What It Is and Isn't

Shopify bot protection keeps checkout open for real buyers during a product drop. It is not a fraud tool. Here is what it covers and where its limits sit.

Your product drop is in an hour. You have limited stock and a crowd of buyers waiting. Some of those buyers are auto-checkout bots. Shopify bot protection is built for this moment, and only this moment.

What Shopify bot protection is

Bot protection is a checkout feature for high-demand sales. It blocks known bots from checkout and slows bot activity. That gives human customers a fair shot at scarce products during a flash sale or drop.

It is not a fraud-fighting feature. Shopify's own guide says it is meant only to limit auto-checkout bots and is not meant to combat fraud related to bot activity. If you turned it on hoping to stop stolen cards, you are using the wrong tool.

What it does at checkout

Bot protection uses a checkpoint page with a challenge. You choose the challenge when you schedule the event: reCAPTCHA or hCaptcha. Both are human-verification puzzles. A real buyer solves one and proceeds.

You can customize the checkpoint page by editing your theme code. That way it matches your store instead of looking like a bolted-on gate.

Availability and limits

There are firm limits on where this feature lives:

  • It is available only for merchants on a Shopify Plus plan.
  • It works only on the Online Store sales channel. Point of sale and other channels are out.
  • You cannot add it to a collection of products.

If you are not on Plus, or your drop runs through another channel, this feature is not part of your toolkit.

How to schedule a bot protection event

Scheduling is built around the drop, not around ongoing worry. You set a start and end time for the event, and it runs during that window. A few rules govern it:

  • Only one event can be scheduled at a time.
  • An active event cannot be edited. If something is wrong, you deactivate it and start over.
  • The event deactivates automatically when the scheduled time ends. You do not need to switch it off yourself.

Plan the window to cover your sale, plus a little padding on each side.

What bot protection does not do

It does not catch stolen cards. It does not flag odd order patterns. It does not stop a human with a stolen card from buying, because a human passes the captcha. Shopify does not offer it as a defense against a card testing attack.

Where to look for fraud protection instead

For actual fraud on orders, Shopify gives you fraud analysis. It helps identify orders that might be fraudulent so you can review them before fulfilling. A high result calls for a careful review, and Shopify fraud analysis high explains what to do with those orders. A medium result is softer, and fraud analysis medium on Shopify covers how to read it.

Use bot protection to keep your drop fair. Use fraud analysis to keep your shipments safe. They answer different questions, and mixing them up leaves one of those questions unanswered.
